My Wardrobe, Myself

The intersection of clothing, emotions, and life

NOTE: This post was originally published on my previous blog, Recovering Shopaholic.

I recently returned from a wonderful 10-day trip to the Lake Tahoe area (I extended my original stay by three days), where I used to live and where some of my family members still reside.   I was fortunate to encounter beautiful weather for most of my time there.  In a post later this week, I will recap what I packed for the trip and how well (or not) it served me, and I will also share the outfits I wore while I was away (check out my last packing recap here).   But today I’d like to highlight some of the photos I took during my vacation.

This was my first trip to Tahoe since I began my photography hobby, so I was eager to visit the many gorgeous locales along the lake to capture the sights.   It was difficult for me to select my favorite shots, so there are more photos in this post than I generally share in my “photography interludes.”  My hope is that you will enjoy the images below and that if you haven’t yet visited Lake Tahoe, you might add it to your “bucket list.”   It truly is one of the most beautiful places I have ever had the pleasure to visit (and I was lucky enough to live there for a year and a half).

Lake Views

Before I start sharing photos of Lake Tahoe, here are some “fast facts” about the lake.  It’s the largest alpine lake in North America at 195 square miles (314 km) in area and a 71 mile (114 km) circumference.   Its length is 21.2 miles (34.1 km) and its width is 11.9 miles (19.2 km).   The average depth of the lake is 980 feet (299 m) and the maximum depth is 1,645 feet (501 m).   The average lake surface temperatures are 40 degrees F (4 C) in the winter and 70 degrees F (21 C) in the summer.  If you’d like to read more about the lake, click here.

Here are some views of beautiful Lake Tahoe.  Yes, the water really is that blue…

Incline Village

When I lived in the Lake Tahoe area, it was in the town of Incline Village, which is on the north shore of the lake and in the state of Nevada (the majority of the lake is in California).   My mom, brother, niece, and nephew still live there and I stayed with my mom on my recent trip.   Incline Village is 6,350 feet (1,940 meters) above sea level and had a population of 8,777 people during the 2010 census.   The average temperature for Incline Village during September is 68 degrees F (20 C), but it was quite a bit warmer than that for much of my trip.   If you’d like to learn more about Incline Village, click here.

One of the great things to do in Incline Village is visit the Hyatt Regency hotel and sit on their lakeside patio.   On the second day of my visit, I spent an entire afternoon and evening there and took dozens of photos.   My friend Julie and I stayed for the sunset and enjoyed the colorful sky and picturesque lake views.   In the afternoon, a wedding was held next to the lake.  While I didn’t photograph the wedding itself out of respect for the guests, I did manage to capture the wedding set-up before everyone arrived.

Here are a few photos taken from the patio of the Hyatt Regency Incline Village:

An Amazing Tahoe Sunset

The beach at Incline Village is where I met my husband back on July 4, 1999 (fast fact – we got married two years to the day later on Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles).  When I visited that beach on a few evenings during my recent stay, it was deserted by comparison.  Only a few people ventured out to see the sunset last Tuesday evening, but those who did were richly rewarded.   I was blessed to see what I consider the most beautiful sunset of my entire life.  While the pictures don’t fully do it justice, I think they provide some sense of the majestic natural beauty that I witnessed.

Here are some images of the Incline Beach and the magical sunset I saw last week:

South Shore Views

It’s possible to drive around the entire lake in approximately 1.5 hours.   My mom and I did that one afternoon and I stopped to take photos in various locations.   I like to take photos of piers and have amassed quite a collection of San Diego pier photos (will likely be the subject of a future “photography interlude” post).  Here are a few photos of a lovely pier in South Lake Tahoe, as well as nearby harbor:

Emerald Bay

One of my favorite places along the lake is Emerald Bay, on the southwest shore.   It is one of the most popular – and most photographed – locations in Lake Tahoe.   The bay is 1.7 miles (2.7 km) in length and about two-thirds of a mile (1 km) at its widest point.  Emerald Bay contains the only island in Lake Tahoe, Fannette Island.

Here are two pictures I took of Emerald Bay, along with a photo my mom took of me there.   I don’t feel that my images fully do it justice, though.  There are lots of great photos of Emerald Bay you can check out HERE.

Heavenly Mountain Resort

The final place I want to show you today is Heavenly Mountain Resort.   This is a large ski resort located on the California-Nevada border in South Lake Tahoe.   Heavenly spans 4,800 acres (1,900 ha) and includes 97 runs and 30 lifts, including a large gondola that is also open during the summer months. I had hoped to go up in the gondola and take photos at the top of the mountain, but it was closed.   It was a cloudy and overcast day when I visited Heavenly, so it’s likely that I wouldn’t have been able to see a lot anyway (at least that’s what I’m telling myself…).    I did take some photos at the lake level of the resort and here are two of them.

Family and Friends – The Best Part of My Trip!

While all of the beautiful Tahoe locations were wonderful to visit and photograph, the highlight of my trip was seeing family and friends.   I was able to spend a lot of time with my mom and younger brother, Scott, as well as my niece Sydney and nephew Christopher (ages 6 and 12).   I also got together with two friends, one of whom (Julie) is shown with me below.

I really need to visit Lake Tahoe more often and the faces below are the most compelling reasons why.   My mom moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Incline Village after she retired six years ago and she loves living in the mountains.  My brother moved to Tahoe shortly after he finished college and is has been a middle school teacher for approximately 15 years now.   I can’t believe my nephew is only 12, as he looks more like 16 to me.  He is a caring and sensitive young man and my niece is a little “firecracker.” She has a lot of spunk and definitely speaks her mind.

My friend Julie is the type of friend with whom I can pick up like no time has elapsed since we last saw each other.  I can tell her anything and she won’t judge me.  Friends like those are rare and I’m lucky to have a few of them.   I also got to spend time with a new friend (also named Debbie) during my stay. She’s a fellow writer and we plan to support each other with your writing projects (I see at least one more book in my future).

In Conclusion

All in all, it was a wonderful trip and I’m glad I was able to extend it by a few days. Yes, that led to a long time between blog posts, but I hope you can forgive me for that.  I will now be back to regular posting and after my travel debrief later this week, I will post my long overdue accountability and “Love It, Wear It” (LIWI) updates.

Thank you for your patience with me during my “modified break” – and actual break – last month.  I will share more about what came up for me during that time shortly.  I am in a better place mentally and emotionally, but I need to carry that momentum forward.   I will be sure to keep you all in the loop as I figure it all out.   Working toward having a fuller life won’t be easy, but I’m bound and determined to do it, especially after I got a taste of what that feels like during my Tahoe trip.

I’m so pleased you enjoyed your break, your photographs are stunning. I’ve never seen such blue! I’m so pleased you spent time with family and friends, an online life is fun but nothing beats a hug in real life. Spending time with loved ones is such a treat, I sincerely hope it gave you a much-needed boost.

    Welcome home, I missed you.

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Thank you so much! Yes, Lake Tahoe is very blue – the pictures don’t fully do it justice. It was SO wonderful to see family and friends! I really do need to spend more time in person with people and am going to try to cultivate more in-person relationships in San Diego… I missed conversing with you and all of my other “End Closet Chaos” friends, too. Your sense of humor is one of the highlights of my days. 🙂

  2. Tonya says:

Beautiful Debbie! I’ve never been there so I enjoyed learning more about it and looking at all of the pictures. The scenery was amazing! My favorite picture photography wise is the south shore, 2nd one down of the pier. Nice work.

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Thanks for your kind words, Tonya. I liked that photo, too. If you ever make a trip to Tahoe (which I think you should), let me know and maybe we could meet up there!

  3. Terra says:

Beautiful photos and your stories accompanying the photographs are rich and wonderful. Thank you for sharing this tender glimpse of your personal life. In my growing up years I spent many summers at Tahoe. It has been years since I have been back and yet seeing through your eyes with the photos you have shared leaves me feeling as though I was there experiencing each moment. Welcome home! It’s good to see the renewed spirit in your face. As you write and work along in the days and months ahead continue to rest and be well my friend. Your energy and passion shines. I love reading you, especially when you are rested and I’m holding thoughts for you to have the space to write and rest your way into the future.

    1. Debbie Roes says:

You are so kind, Terra, and I always appreciate your comments. How cool that you spent summers in Tahoe while you were growing up! I didn’t go there much when I was young, but started to go more often after my brother moved there over 20 years ago. It’s a beautiful and magical place and does help to renew my spirit. Thank you for your kind wishes!

  4. Susie says:

Debbie, your pictures are just gorgeous! Wow, what incredible scenery. I’m so glad to hear that you had a nice visit.

I’ve not been to Tahoe but my husband has, for a bike ride around the lake that is in support of the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.) When he was there, he did do the gondola ride and really enjoyed it.

Did you get to see Mo while you were there?

    1. Mo says:

I was sadly way too overwhelmed with work that week (7 shifts in 7 days) and couldn’t even get out of PJ’s or leave the house the Sunday I was off that we could have met up. But there will be another opportunity soon I’m sure!

    2. Debbie Roes says:

I think my husband has done that bike ride, too, Susie! The ride around the lake is gorgeous. I have only done it in a car, but I’m sure it would be amazing on a bike, too. I was sad not to see Mo, but I will just have to make another visit soon and hope she is less busy. I used to go to Tahoe twice a year, but it had been almost a year and a half this time. Fingers crossed that I will be back sooner and that Mo and I will be able to hook up!

  5. Carter says:

Beautiful pictures! I’m so glad you were able to get away for an extended rest. Also thrilled you’re back! Where is a picture of you and Mo?? Hope you two were able to get together.

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Thank, Carter. Sadly, Mo and I weren’t able to hook up due to her busy work schedule. Otherwise, I would have definitely included a photo with her. I hope that next time, I will be able to finally meet her in person.

  6. Julie says:

I was so happy to see you!!! Like always, we had a great time together. You are right. No matter how long it has been, we pick up just like we had lunch the day before. I love you like the sister I never had. Until next time… XOXO

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Yes, it was SO wonderful to see you and it was good to see you more than once this time (even though the first time when I was very sick didn’t really count). I love you like a sister, too! Let’s try to be better at keeping in touch. It would be wonderful if you and George could make a visit to San Diego soon.

  7. Mo says:

Great pics!! So bummed I couldn’t make a meet. I didn’t know the Gondola was closed down then. You’re right, too cloudy for a good view anyway 😉
You will just have to come back when it’s up and running and the sun is shining and I am not working like a mad woman. Deal? 😀

    1. Debbie Roes says:

I will definitely be back and we will try again. I understand being really busy and worn out. I have had those times in my life, too. I really hope I will be able to go up in the gondola next time, too, and that the views will be favorable. I will keep you posted on my next visit, which will hopefully be only a few months from now.

  8. Alice says:

Stunning photographs, I especially like the South Shore views. So glad you have had a great break, it sounds as if it was really inspiring
    Alice

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Thanks, Alice. Yes, my break was quite inspiring and I even wish I could have stayed longer. I guess I’ll just have to go back soon…

  9. Claire says:

I’m so glad you were able to be renewed and refreshed, Debbie, it does show! And you brought some of that refreshment back to us in those pics, so pretty, thank you. I hope you are able to enjoy and build on that momentum… look forward to hearing more about that and everything else of course! Really good to have you back. xo

    1. Debbie Roes says:

It’s so nice to feel like I was missed and to be welcomed back, Claire. I will definitely share more about my trip and what came up for me. It DID help to refresh me and I’m very glad that I went.

  10. N says:

You look so relaxed and happy!! I am pleased to see you looking so comfortable! And your photos ARE beautiful!

    1. Debbie Roes says:

I appreciate your kind words, N, and I’m glad you liked the photos!

  11. Lynn says:

Great post, and I’m so glad you extended your stay. I can really see your future happiness in travel and photography. I’m sure many of us will be interested to hear what you packed and what you wish you’d packed but please let go of feeling guilty that you haven’t posted. We will enjoy your post when it arrives, but it’s more important that you are leading that fuller life in which shopping and clothes take a minor role.

    1. Debbie Roes says:

I really appreciate what you wrote, Lynn. I DO need to focus more on living a fuller life even if that means stepping back from the blog from time to time. Ideally I will be able to do both, but it was helpful for me to truly have some down time during my trip. Yes, travel and photography bring my happiness, so I hope to be able to do more of both!

  12. KimM. says:

What superb photography Debbie! I’ve always wanted to visit Lake Tahoe and now I want to even more. I especially loved those sunset photos. Stunning! SO glad you had a great time with your family.

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Thanks, Kim! The sunset photos were my favorites, too. I have a lot of them, but picked the best ones to include in this post. That sunset was probably the very best I’ve ever seen. I’m so glad I ventured out that night.

  13. Karin says:

Thanks for sharing your lovely photos and family with us. It’s great to hear that you feel rejuvenated. It’s clear from the photos how much you enjoyed the trip!

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Yes, I really enjoyed my trip, Karin, and it did help to rejuvenate me. I will have to travel more often… I’m glad you liked my photos.

  14. Di Collins says:

What an amazing place, captured beautifully by your photos. Love seeing you so happy and relaxed. Time spent with family is always so precious.

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Yes, it’s an amazing place, but I know you had such wonderful places where you live, too. I hope to be able to visit your fine country within the next few years. It’s been on my “bucket list” for a really long time…

  15. Tara says:

Beautiful photos, and you look radiant. It was obviously a great trip! I have been to Tahoe many years ago but only in winter for skiing. It is 46 degrees here in Montreal and winter will be here soon. Spent lots of time weeding out the closet and storage containers. I decided to give away anything that didn’t fit in the closet or drawers. No more clothes in storage. 4 trash bags went to the Salvation Army. It felt good!

    1. Debbie Roes says:

Good to hear from you, Tara! Wow, it’s getting cold in Montreal pretty early in the season (but maybe that’s normal there). Good for you for getting rid of so much stuff! It always feels good to do that, doesn’t it? I hope things are going well for you in your new home and you’re happy in your retirement. As for Tahoe, it is beautiful year round. The summers are as busy there as the winters, but I went there after the crowds had left and it was nice to have some quiet.

  16. Sam says:

All of these photos are beautiful, thank you for posting them!

    1. Debbie Roes says:

You’re welcome. Glad you liked them, Sam!
